Last one, and that’s it.

I call Monica one more time. It goes straight to voicemail. I hang up. Alright, that’s it. I’m not calling anymore. It’s definitely about to go into stalker territory.

Without a job to moor me to any sort of schedule, I have no concept of time. I’m not even sure if the last time I saw Monica was yesterday or a week ago. It feels like an eon since I heard her voice or saw her face. She’s always on my mind, though. It’s deeply unsettling and comforting all at once.

But even with my cleared schedule, I haven’t been idle. Monica was right, back at Origin, when she said I have connections all over the city. I never really thought about it before, it just sort of came with the territory. But, now that I need information, I truly realize how valuable those connections have become.

First order of business was to see how Katie was doing. If I knew that, I’d be able to get a read on how Monica’s doing. And what she’s doing.

Luckily, I have some contacts at NYC Health. Granted, they were in the cardiology department, but a few phone calls, some vague favors, and a little cash, I’d been able to get introduced to a nurse over the phone in the department where Katie is staying.

Apparently, Katie is quite the patient. While not demanding per se, her notions of healthcare seem kind of medieval in nature. From all reports, she’s doing much better, despite some set-backs here and there. But likely to pull through, and be discharged soon.

It’s clear Monica has been a trooper throughout it all. My new nurse spy-friend says Monica has barely left the hospital, staying at Katie’s side, and actually being a valuable go-between when Katie has her more eccentric moments.

My next order of business was to check out Katie’s health insurance situation. A few phone calls later, and using my deepest insurance adjuster impersonation voice, I was able to track down some info. Turns out, Katie’s medical requests may be borne out of necessity, rather than a weird taste for blood-letting and leeches. Katie has no insurance. Nothing. This hospital stay will break her, financially.

That led to my next to-do list item. Squirreling some money into a high interest savings fund that Katie can liquefy quickly. If I can somehow get that info to her or Nadia, she should have enough to keep her afloat for a bit. Top priority is keeping all this secret from Monica.

I may not know everything about her, but I’m damn sure Monica is too proud to accept charity. It’s arguable whether this constitutes charity, but I’d rather not debate her on the point. Just get her friend some help, that’s all.

But why? You don’t even know Katie.

And now, the last order of business looms before me. Which is, of course, the only piece of business that consumes me at present. Where is Monica and why isn’t she returning my calls?

This is where my connections fail me.
